ENVIRONMENT

At the Icdas group companies, environmental management is done in accordance with national and international standards. The ISO 14001 Environmental Management System conditions have been met by Icdas at its facilities and independent organisations have inspected the Environmental Management System. Icdas A.Ş. continues its efforts in developing its environmental management activities with the framework of the Environmental Politics  which has been approved by High Level Management.
The environmental management system practiced at the facilities of Icdas has received praise and awards nationally and internationally. Some of these are as follows:

2005 - ISTANBUL CHAMBER OF INDUSTRY Sector Environmental Award
2006 - KOCAELİ S.O. Şahabettin Bilgisu Environmental Incentive Award
2008 – EU Program of Turkey Management Category 1st Prize Y
2009- Akdeniz University Service to the Environment Award
2010- İSTANBUL CHAMBER OF INDUSTRY Environmental Sustainability Award
2011- Ministry of Development Best Practice of Sustainability Award
2012- BM Rio+20 Sustainability Development Conference, Best Implementation Example
2011- İSTANBUL CHAMBER OF INDUSTRY Environmental Management and Corporate Responsibility 1st Prize

Icdas is also one of the leading organisations from the aspect of accordance with legal necessities. The Icdas companies are one of the rare group of companies who have taken all the necessary Permissions and Licenses in accordance with Environmental Laws.

Waste, Emissions and Wastewater

Water and Wastewater Management

The first stage of water and wastewater management is to minimize water consumption. With this object in mind, process cooling water is designed as closed cycle, and at the same time, it is ensured that the same water is reused after treatment. Process wastewater discharge is cancelled out by reusing the water by subjecting it to treatment and cooling processes. Whole of the potable and utility water requirement of the facilities is met from the sea. Underground water usage of the facility is completely cancelled out by commissioning the facility with a capacity of 12.000 m3/day for obtaining the utility water from the sea, and the great responsibility for the protection of underground water in the region is fulfilled.

The wastewaters originating from our facility are divided into two groups as domestic waste water and cooling water.
Source of the domestic waste water in our facility is the domestic grade sources collected from the units such as kitchens, baths, etc. Domestic wastewater is treated and discharged as treated with 14 biological treatment plants dispersed throughout the facility.
Whereas our cooling water discharges are the seawaters used for the purpose of cooling the process water. Process water circulating through the closed cycle are cooled by using seawater through heat exchangers. While the cooled process water is reused for the purpose of production, the seawater cooled the process water is discharged to the sea. The heat exchange during this process occurs inside the titanium plated heat exchangers. The seawater taken to the facility is discharged back to the sea without contacting any chemical or physical substances. Sea bream and sea bass nursery with 25 ton/year capacity is constructed at the point of discharge of this water. Temperature and cleanliness of the cooling water lead to the creation of ideal conditions for aquaculture.

Emission Management:

Our facility became the first arc furnace steel plant and the first thermal power plant obtaining environmental permit and license. All emission measurements in our facilities are carried out periodically by the institutions approved by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning. Also, the emission values from our facility stacks are measured instantly with the continuous emission measurement device. These values can be followed up on 24 hours basis through our web page. Air Quality Measurement Station is constructed for continually monitoring the air quality of the region and data is transferred to the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning. The data obtained from the Station can be monitored through the web page of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning.

Solid Waste Management:
Our essential principle in the management of process wastes and other wastes created in our facilities is to ensure that these wastes are recycled. As a result of the R&D studies and investments carried out with this objective in mind, it is determined that the process wastes created in our facilities could be raw materials for many industries. And at the end of the works being carried out, 99.7% of the wastes became recycled or recovered products.
Greenhouse gases are monitored regularly at Icdas facilities since 2005. Amount of carbon emitted per ton of steel is reduced every year by carrying the energy efficiency increasing projects into effect. While the amount of carbon emitted for one ton of steel production was 250 kg CO2 in 2005, whereas the amount of carbon emitted was 180 kg CO2/one ton of steel in 2011. Icdas facilities greenhouse gas calculations are carried out in compliance with ISO 14064 standards since 2011.
Afforestration activities are carried out in order to create greenhouse gases absorber areas. “Bekirli Rehabilitation Site” of the Ministry of Forestry with 57.000 trees in an area of 127 hectare is created by Icdas. Also an “Icdas Memorial Forest” is created in Gallipoli peninsula by our company.

Also 123.862 various saplings are planted in the surroundings and internal lands of our facilities. Number of saplings and the regions, where the saplings are planted, are given in the following table.

Planted regions Number of Saplings Planted
Değirmencik 94.402
Bekirli Power Plant Site 17.760
Bekirli Rehabilitation Site 57.000
Aksaz 7.700
Çakırlı 2.000
Gürecealtı 500
Gallipoli Peninsula 1.500
Total 180.862

4 Hydroelectric power plants (HPP) are commissioned within our facilities with the intention of using the renewable energy sources efficiently. Also a 60 MW Renewable Energy Power Plant Project is planned to be commissioned in 2013.
Energy management is carried out in the Icdas facilities in compliance with the principles of ISO 50001 Energy Management System.
Energy efficiency works covers all Icdas facilities. All units monitor their own resource and energy consumptions and establish targets with regard to this. Many projects from lighting to engine efficiency are carried out throughout the facilities.
Researchers are carried out and action plans are established and followed up continuously for the opportunities in increasing the energy efficiency within the scope of ISO 50001 system.
